Oct.1,China Day Celebration—the most meaningful day of Lander for me
Today is Oct. 1.Today is China Day Celebration. People's Republic of China was founded on Oct.1 of 1949.I’ve never thought of organizing this kind of activity to celebrate our China National Day before. My friends in Shanghai have a seven-day rest during the China National Day.But now I’m in America, which has a different culture;we have no break so what can we do?When today will pass ,I want to say all of the Chinese people in Lander have done well and my breast has been filled with emotion.I’d like to share what I’ve experienced, what I’ve thought ,and how I’ve been moved.
A few days ago,I had heard that the college of Business&Public Affairs and the office of International Programs would organize four kinds of activities to celebrate our China National Day which would be an exhibition of Chinese arts, painting, calligraphy ,music, featured Chinese cuisine. The speech Chinese society and culture would be presentated by Po Hu, who is the Dean of International Programs ,and the speech US-China relations would be presentated by Prof.Chad Kinsella.I was expecting that day to come.
When Han Gao told me that we would organize the exhibition of Chinese arts, painting, calligraphy and music by ourselves at 11:30a.m-13:30p.m. on Oct.1.I was happy and worried.I thought it would be a good opportunity of showing Chinese culture ,but in the meantime we were worried whether the exhibition would be successful. It would be the first time for all of us to organize the activity in Lander. But I still remember that sentence said by Po Hu that China National Day is our day and we have the duty of making it well. That sentence gave us energy.Han Gao and I discussed the details of the activities. We found a lot of beautiful postcards of China. We decided to ask Chinese students to give Americans Chinese names and write it down on the postcard.Po suggested us to make some Chinese tea for distribution.Student Cheng Zhang told us that he could teach American how to write Chinese Calligraphy.Great! And Pro.Liu would paint Chinese painting on the scene. The International Program Office and some Chinese students would offer some Chinese works of art.At that moment you could feel that the work get lighter from everyone’s help.It was important for us to encourage all of the Chinese in Lander to join it.We did it just as we thought.
On Sep.30,I sent one message to all of the Chinese students and scholars to remind them of the activities the next day. I asked several students and Mr.Shan to give us some helps for the preparation for the activity on Oct.1.On the night of that day,I decided to make several small Five-Starred Red Flags and the instruction of the activity. After that, many students asked me how I could make it.I just wanted to say that you can don anything you set your mind to.If you want to do something well, you can do something well.
The day is coming. In the morning Han and I took the television from Boyoung’s house to the Student Center Common where there were six desks .We played some scenes about China on the TV.I printed the pictures of five-starred red flags in color and the instruction of the activity under Jeff’s help, and then I made four five-starred red flags by myself.Do you see the picture of me holding four flags in front of the picture of the Palace Museum? On this special day,I like this picture very much.
Student Yuchen Shen and Cheng Zhang came to our office at 10 o’clock. We took all the things to the Student Center Commons. It took us an hour and a half to arrange the materials. The first desk was for making tea and giving Chinese names on postcards. The second desk was for teaching Americans to learn how to write Chinese calligraphy. The third desk was the exhibition of arts. The fouth desk was for playing film. The other two desks were for Chinese Painting.
During the preparation,Jeff accompanied us and he helped us to resolve problems when we met any .I met Dr. Love who is Dean of Arts &Huamanity College. This was the first time I met her ,but she knew my name.I was excited with that.To my surprise,Dr. Love gave us a lot of help. She took two plants and one beautiful fish tank out of her office for us to arrange.Do you see the red lantern on the ceiling? It’s hers, too. She was nice enough to give us the red lantern!Do you know who hang the lantern? The two Chinese scholars also hang the red lantern.Look, that picture! We worked together happily! The process was very important.I recorded it by my cell-phone.
There were two or three Chinese students behind each table at 1130a.m. .We began to welcome Lander’s people to visit our tables.Po Hu ,Boyoung, Dr.Love ,Dr.Rausch and Dr.Wuma joined us. Dr.Wuma is a professor of business college ,who gave us a lot of help .Dr. Rausch is a history professor, who introduced his students to our China National Day.Many Americans visited our tables. Some were interested in the Chinese art exhibition. Our volenteers Yongqin,Yuping and Qinlei introduced Chinese history for the Americans. Some were standing beside Mr.Liu and appreciated Mr.Liu’s painting.Student Xin Chang helped to translate the painting to other people. They were amazed that it took a short time for Mr.Liu to finish the painting.Mr.Liu let them know that he was an excellent artist in China. Some were waiting to learn Chinese calligraphy and have their names written in Chinese on the postcards. There were several lines in front of the tables.Others enjoyed Chinese tea and Chinese music.Look these pictures! The Americans looked very happy!
During the exhibition,I met a Chinese lady named by Caiyan Huang. Her husband is a teacher in Celmson University. She is from Zhejiang Province.Pedro Lopets is her neighbour, whom I met in Shanghai Normal .The world is small. She heard that there would be some Chinese activities on Oct.1 in Lander. She was curious about that.We talked a lot and she was surprised that there were so many Chinese in Lander.I thought she found sense of belonging. We exchanged our telephone numbers. We took a picture together. She looked happy.
Every volunteer enjoyed introducing Chinese culture and Chinese language. We were proud of using our own way to celebrate our own day.We were glad that Lander’s people were interested in Chinese culture. It was a good opportunity for every Chinese to show our culture.
At the end of the exhibition, all of the volteers ,Dr.Love and several Lander students took a group picture.Just as the Chinese calligraphy in the picture said,Lander and China’s friendship remain forever.
Particully worth mentioning is that Dean Hu made a presentation of Chinese society and culture.Though he has been in America for many years,he still paid a lot of attention to China .We all thought that he had given a clear presentation of China.Another thing that should be mentioned is that Lander’s dining room offered featured Chinese cuisine. We really enjoyed the Chinese food.Thank you for the opportunity offered by International Program and college of Business & Public Affair. We will remember this meaningful day forever.
