NAFSA conference in North Calolina
It’s a good opportunity for me to attend NAFSA conference in North Calolina from Oct.27 to Oct.30.NAFSA is the world’s largest nonprofit association dedicated to international education and exchange. It advance policies that connect students, scholars, educatiors, and citizens across borders and enable the academic and economic partnerships needed to face 21st century challenges.
During the conference,Boyoung and I gained the opportunity of visiting Duke University and University of North Calolina. One is the private school and the other is the public school. Both of these two universities have hundred of international students. When we walked in their campuses,we met a lot of Asian students.Sometimes we didn't think it was in the Foreign university.International students are the important part of American universities. Now I felt that point deeply.
After the tour of two universities,we could choose what we were interested in the sessions to attend. One session lasted one hour and fifteen minutes. The presentors are from different universities of American. From the presentations, you could see what International program office of American university pay attention to , the problem of International students and what we could do for International students.
I attented seven sessions during two days.Addressing the social needs of Chinese students; It's not a trip. It's an education!Finding the Middle Ground:using intercultural communication tools to better understand students from the middle east.Purposeful engagement :connecting International students with the campus&community.Big bang theory of extended orientation;Starting a peer of leader program;healthy, happy&helping:healthcare in the U.S. for International students. These workshops were devoted to improving International education and how to deal with International students issues.
Some presentors mentioned the International students' perspective.Language, homesick, the abuse of justice, sterotypes and generalization ,religion, mixed gender class and so on.Some reports said that 40% International students didn't have close relationships with American students.71%students have the need of involving in American in the first three months. It's very important to let international students have self-identity.It's lucky for international students that many universities noticed the problem of international students. They try their best to build some programs or orientations .They are very helpful to help students to involve themselves into campuses.Building some programs specially for increasing the relationship of International students and American students, teaching American students how to make friends with International students, having some pointed orientations and so on are necessary.I am interested in the programs and orientations.I copies some universities' way. After some sessions,Boyoung and I exchanged our gains from the presentations. We hope to improve Lander's programs for International students.
During NAFSA,I met four Chinese in all.Two are presentors from Duke University. The other two Chinese I met were in the exhibition hall. They are members of two American companies. One is working for international students healthy inssurance and the other is working for structure. All of us were very excited and we communicated with each other.Everywhere you can meet Chinese, which made us happily.
